The Juvenile workshop schedule is also available. Remember to check your program book for any changes to the program schedule or room assignments. Sneak Peak: Conference Workshop Preview This year we have more than 50 workshop sessions, plus a special track just for juvenile scleroderma patients and their family members. We are excited that more than 15 sessions are new this year. Here’s a peek at two new sessions this year: Celebration of Life - How Hope, A Miracle and the Power of Attitude Helped This Young Man Survive Scleroderma Andrew Botieri is a male scleroderma survivor. He recently published a book titled, “A Celebration of Life - A Story of Hope, A Miracle and The Power of Attitude.” The book recounts his physical and mental struggles and eventual triumph over this horrible autoimmune disease. As a male diagnosed in 1999, not much was known about the disease and how it affects men. In this session, follow Andrew on his medical journey from kidney failure and coma to his weekly dialysis treatments and how he brought hope to other dialysis patients. Medical Emergency Readiness and Visiting the ER: What You Need to Know Dr. Murtaza Cassoobhoy will present a workshop that will focus on tips to help you successfully navigate the hospital system from an initial emergency room visit through an inpatient stay. You will learn about: What information should you have available/accessible about your illness and treatment preferences? Who are the hospital staff you will encounter and how can they help you? How can you be proactive about your care in the hospital? Be sure to check your program book for the exact time and location of each session. Stop by and Visit the Exhibit Hall (Shown right: Dr. Richard Sagall, President of NeedyMeds, speaks with a conference attendee in the exhibit hall during last year’s conference in Dallas, Texas.) Be sure to visit the exhibit hall at the National Patient Education Conference. This is an excellent opportunity to meet with representatives from more than 20 organizations and partners, including the American College of Rheumatology, Caring Voice Coalition and Allsup. There also will be an opportunity to meet authors Linda McNamara and Karen Kemper (“If You Have to Wear an Ugly Dress, Learn to Accessorize: Guidance, Inspiration, and Hope for Women with Lupus, Scleroderma, and Other Autoimmune Illnesses”) who will be delivering the conference’s closing keynote address. This year, the exhibit hall hours are: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, July 26 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 27 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 28 Also, conference attendees are encouraged to visit exhibit booths and complete an “Exhibit Expedition” activity card. When you submit a completed activity card, you will be entered into a raffle to win a $50 gift card at the end of the conference.
