Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) Seascape near Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, June 1888 Van Gogh Museum Van Gogh painted this seascape outdoors. In fast, loose brushstrokes he tried to capture the color of the sea. He described it as a color like mackerel, in other words, changing — you dont always know if its green or purple — you dont always know if its blue — because a second later, its changing reflection has taken on a pink or grey hue. (letter to Theo 3/4 June 1888)
