Lèse-majesté is a remnant of a time when absolute rulers claimed divine right to rule via descent from a god. Thailand still has it. American occupation ended the crime of lèse-majesté in Japan in 1947. Lèse-majesté is intimately connected with the criminalization of libel. One day, all laws, including the Revised Penile Code, will actually be revised, throwing away all the repressive baggage of the past. But today is not that day.
