Violence and Conflict Workshop Tuesday, 13 May, 5:00-7:00pm, Wolfson Seminar Room (South), Trinity College (not Wolfson College!) Speaker: Sebastian Jackson (Division of Social Anthropology, Clare Hall) The Colour of Consciousness: ‘Race’ Relations and Student Politics in 1970s Cape Town, South Africa This paper examines militant student politics at the University of the Western Cape—an institute of higher education for the so-called ‘coloured’ elite—in South Africa during the tumultuous 1970s. The dominant historical narratives of 20th often disregarded ‘coloured’ participation in the anti-apartheid struggle. These narratives depict the marginalized coloured community as apolitical, obsequious, and compliant with Afrikaner supremacy. This paper will contend that coloured student politics—and anti-apartheid politics in particular—refute these narratives. Through an appraisal of student poetry and UWC’s archival sources, this article recounts episodes of discontent and violence amongst militant students, their more dutiful and compliant peers, the university, and the apartheid state at large.
