Visible Evidence was a great conference I was able to get to in Stockholm last month. Many good discussions, hard to see films, and what appears to be the Film of the Year, The Act of Killing, were prominent. The Act of Killing gives a group of death squad leaders in indonesia the chance to stage their acts, past and present, in their own way and creates enormous cognitive disssonance for anyone hoping for a moral stance and clear judgment on what they say and did. None if forthcoming from the government, which remains in bed with these men and their organizations, and what the film itself provides is more oblique that most documentaries. The effect is very unsettling, not least of all for what it prompts us to think about our own government and its ways of staging, narrating and justifying its actions.
