Voice Acting Tip of the Week: Cold reading is VERY IMPORTANT. Hated reading out loud in elementary school? Youre going to learn to love it, or at least tolerate it, if you want to be a voice actor. When you go in to record, you are almost never given the script in advance. You get your lines right then and there and are expected to not only read them out loud, but perform them in character, with the director and often clients watching you. Sounds like a pretty high-pressure situation, no? Thats why you need to get comfortable with cold reading. Read out loud, by yourself (so its not a situation where you have anything to lose if you make mistakes). It can be anything...a magazine, news article, textbook, anything particularly word-heavy is great especially if it has words you are unfamiliar with pronouncing. (There will be many situations when you have to learn pronounce words you dont know...sometimes in a foreign language...and make them sound natural to your character!) Make sure you SLOW DOWN AND ENUNCIATE so you dont trip over your words. If you mess up---and you will---dont worry! Just start the sentence or paragraph over from the beginning and do it until you can say the whole thing smoothly. Even your favorite pro VAs mess up sometimes too. But if you practice and learn this important skill, you will be able to avoid making so many slipups, become less nervous about reading, and focus on getting into character!
