Volunteer ESL Instructor Position Description Instructor will teach ESL classes to Soldiers and spouses at ACS with Literacy of Northern New York. Instructor will work with a specific level of ESL students: Beginners from 8:15-10:15 am T/Th, Intermediate students from 10:30am-12:30pm T/Th, or Advanced from 9:00-11:00am T/Th. They provide structured lessons appropriate for the students level of English competency using, if desired, curricular material provided by ACS and LNNY. Classes are offered twice weekly for each level, for two hours at a time. Instructors can teach the class twice per week, or team teach and give one class time per week. Evaluation can be provided as desired from ACS personnel or LNNY staff. Lesson plan suggestions or letters of recommendation can also be requested. For teachers unable to teach in New York state, this is a way to keep teaching resume active, broaden range of teaching experiences, and make oneself more marketable as an educator. ESL is on the rise in education and having experience working an ESL population is an invaluable experience as an educator. Tutors also work directly with Soldiers and spouses, giving back to the Fort Drum community. LNNY will provide initial training for all new tutors. Ongoing critiques and training can be requested at any time. The LNNY teacher training acts as an orientation for tutors, and ACS staff can join new tutors in their class at first, as well, in order to help tutors become familiar with students and comfortable in the teaching setting. Preferred qualifications include some teaching experience, working with ESL students, or an education background.
