“Vow of Pimpery”: Booker T. Washington stated in his book “Up From Slavery” that many Blacks choose to be a religious leader after being freed from slavery to avoid hard labor; to get paid for talking rather than for the use of their physical body. He said they would look up at the hot sun and look at their fellow Black brothers and sisters sweating under the sun picking cotton and say “Lord I think I’ve been called to preach…” This practice continues until today; Many Blacks that would only be qualified to be low-level laborers in the regular work-world can live as corporate executives as “Preachers” in the Black Community. So, they silently vow to themselves to use their preaching as a means to get rich: A “Vow of Pimpery” instead of a “Vow of Poverty”. A Vow of Poverty is what many ministers and priests take when they pledge to work for God; they take a vow to only accept minimal fees to pay for their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter; they vow to live on the level of a poor person.
