#WA #Weather #News #CTCorp 8:20 AM Continue to take action with severe weather north of a line from Bidyadanga to Giles Wednesday 7 January 2015 - 8:20 AM If you live in parts of WA north of a line from Bidyadanga to Giles you should continue to take action and stay safe with more severe weather to come. This includes people in, near and between Broome, Derby, Kuri Bay, Kalumburu, Wyndham and Kununurra and surrounding areas. This is typical weather for this time of year but could damage homes and make travel dangerous. WHAT TO DO: • Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. • Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones if there is lightning. • If caught outside find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams. • If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home. • If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water. IF DRIVING: • Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current. • Slow down, turn your lights on and keep a safe distance from other drivers. • Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen powerlines and loose debris. • If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears. • Take care in areas that have been flooded and Be careful driving on gravel roads as surfaces will be slippery and muddy, and vehicles could become bogged. WEATHER DETAILS: As at 4:34am on Wednesday 7 January 2015 the Bureau of Meteorology advise a slow moving tropical low lies between Derby and Fitzroy Crossing and is producing showers and thunderstorms over the Kimberley and northeast parts of the North Interior. It will be monitored closely for the potential to move over open water and develop into a tropical cyclone. Whilst there is only a moderate risk of the system developing into a tropical cyclone, it will produce areas of heavy rainfall and gusty thunderstorms until Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms may produce heavy rainfall that could cause flash flooding in parts of the warning area, particularly over northern and western parts of the Kimberley and near the tropical low. Flood Advices have also been issued, please refer to bom.gov.au/wa/warnings/ for full details. Gusty thunderstorms may occur over far western parts of the Kimberley, including Broome. Between 9:00 am Tuesday and 5:00 am Wednesday, the following rainfall totals have been recorded: Kalumburu 79.4 millimetres, Curtin RAAF 58.8 millimetres. The overall weather pattern is not unusual for this time of year, but heavy rainfall may occur in some parts of the warning area and cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous. IMPORTANT NUMBERS: • If your home has been badly damaged by storm call the SES on 132 500. • In a life threatening situation call 000. • For the latest weather information visit bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 213.
