Description: Flash floods killed more than 20 people in several central provinces after a tropical depression over the East Sea intensified into Storm No.8 Tuesday morning and brought heavy rains and strong winds. The Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control reported 24 dead as of 5 p.m. Monday in Dak Lak, Ha Tinh, Nghe An, Quang Nam, and Quang Tri Provinces. Rescuers are searching for six missing people in Quang Ngai, Ha Tinh, and Quang Binh provinces. Six people have also been injured, two each in Quang Binh and Quang Nam and one each in Quang Tri and Da Nang City. The storm has damaged nearly 5,000 houses and 2,491 hectares (4,942 acres) of rice, according to Center for Flood and Storm Control in central Vietnam. It also killed or swept away hundreds of heads of cattle and damaged 23 bridges and irrigation structures. More than 6,000 people who had been evacuated in Dak Lak, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue between September 16 and 19 have since returned home. The floodwaters have receded and authorities and residents in affected areas have begun cleaning up. Bui Minh Tang, director of the National Center for Hydro - Meteorological Forecasting, said between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning Storm No.8 weakened into a tropical depression after making landfall over Da Nang, Quang Nam, and Thua Thien-Hue and moved to southern Laos.6012
