WARNING!! READ!! Salmon poached from Chief Joseph Hatchery... Colville Confederated Tribes Fish and Wildlife Department M E M O R A N D U M August 20, 2013 To: The Public From: Randall Friedlander Interim Fish and Wildlife Program Director Subject: Health Warning/Reward for Conviction of Poachers This message is to inform the public that salmon were recently poached out of the broodstock pens of the Chief Joseph Hatchery. These fish were treated with Formalin and are not fit for human consumption. If you know of any individual(s) who may have poached, or be in possession of these fish, please notify either the Colville Tribal Natural Resources Enforcement (NRE) or Colville Tribal Police Department (CTPD). Do not consume or handle these fish as doing so could seriously affect your health. If you believe you have consumed or handled these fish, then it is recommended that you should immediately seek medical attention. The Colville Confederated Tribes (CCT) Fish and Wildlife Department is offering a $500.00 reward for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of any person(s) involved in this matter. I would also like to state the significance of what has taken place. Fish that will be used for spawning are referred to as broodstock. Broodstock is currently collected weekly so that the Colville Tribe will have fish to raise in their hatchery. The initial estimate on what was lost is 42 wild summer Chinook. That equates to approximately 73,500 fish that may have been released in the future. The amount of spring Chinook and other stocks, which may have been taken, has not been quantified at this time. The North Shore Access Road at Chief Joe will be closed at sunset daily as a result of this occurrence. Individuals with information are encouraged to call the police at 634-2472.
