***WARNING!!!!*** These pictures are GRAPHIC so if you have a weak stomach, feel free to scroll on by. Today we received a call from Perkins Police about a gull in a parking lot. Apparently the gull had been attacked by what the person thought was a hawk. Wanting to protect the hawk, the people reported the scene to the police. Last week I posted about how we, as rehabilitators and nature lovers, try not to interfere with nature. Just to make sure everything was as it was reported, Judi Robles volunteered to check the scene out on her way home. When she arrived, the hawk had already come back to finish the job. If you are familiar with birds, you already know that this is, in fact, a hatch-year peregrine falcon! This falcon was probably born from the nesting pair at the coal docks in Sandusky, Ohio. While it is perfectly okay to feel sadness for the gull who lost his life, you should also feel joy for what that sacrificed life means. These photographs below more than likely depict one of this birds first successful hunts. Yes, it does mean that one animal had to die but in doing so, it ensures the continuation of the circle of life. What an amazing thing to get to witness! And what an amazing comeback peregrine falcons are making in Ohio. In honor of this amazing predator, I will make a post tomorrow or Thursday about his incredible, high octane, action-movie-intense species!
