WARNING! When temperatures dip, dont let your desire for heat lead to disaster! Every year, deaths and injuries result from improper use of portable fuel-burning heaters. When not properly used and monitored, they can cause fires or carbon monoxide poisoning. Before purchasing or using a fuel-burning space heater, get specific information from the dealer or manufacturer; talk it over with local fire service members. Grills should never be used in an enclosed space. Before you cozy up to one of these appliances, here are a few tips for staying safe while using fuel-fired portable fireplaces and heaters: Check fire codes to make sure a device is allowed Get a carbon monoxide alarm Take the fuel-fired portable heater outside for refueling Do not use fuel-fired portable heaters in a bedroom or bathroom that is not well vented Don’t pour fuel in a device that is lit or not completely cool Create a “safe zone” around the device by keeping children, pets and anything that can burn at least three feet away.
