WASHINGTON DC, Cafe Review. Ok so a lost phone while travelling always makes things interesting.. Now that I am back up and running here is my review on the Washington DC Cafe / Coffee scene... I spent a few days out on the town in DC. I loved this place, its clean, green, geographically flat except for the “HILL” and there is a feeling of importance and power... Perhaps because in some ways the people who live and work around this place control a big part of the world.. The quality of the restaurants, food and coffee in DC is just amazing.. However you wil need deep pockets.. On with the Coffee….First up I visited ME Swings coffee who is the oldest roaster in DC, established in 1916. Fortunately they have kept up with the changes in the industry and provide a very good cup of coffee both a blend and some nice singles from a 3 group LM. It was great to see some of the old equipment and fixtures including, grinders, scales and ornate mirrors. Cupping sessions available on Friday mornings at their roastery slightly south of the CBD. swingscoffee I dropped into FilterCoffeeHouse for a Ethiopian pour over which seemed to have been prepped perfectly as i could taste the bright fruity flavours as described and didn’t want the cup to finish. Next stop was going to be a highlight and i was not disappointed.. La Colombe Torrefaction, Torrerfaction meaning was described and fits the name well. I will let you google the meaning for yourself.. The space, a renovated abandoned warehouse had been meticulously transformed to a brilliant cafe. I was intrigued also to see the SteamPunk equipment by Alpha Dominche which is seamlessly able to recreate almost any brewing process. It was an impressive feature to the brewing bar and made the labour intensive process of siphon coffee not such a chore. So I was here to join Dave “Head of Training” for a cupping session of some nice singles.. The highlight being a rare and expensive Panama Gesha from the Perci Estate. Think, chocolate, berry & starburst flavours with a lingering sweet finish. I swallowed rather than spat this gem and the aroma was amazing under the crust. Thanks again Dave for your time, hospitality and souvenirs. lacolombe.au I also managed to get past new player on the DC scene, CompasCoffee Here they were running without a traditional machine but rather a concept that had been in my head since my days studying Industrial design. The MODBAR, 4 in fact, along with 3 LM Vulcano swift grinders and one of the worlds most efficient and smart “Loring” coffee roasters on display. No expense spared, the setup really blew me away. A must see if you like coffee, toys and technology. To sum it up Washington has an absolutely amazing coffee culture, the people here are very, very lucky to have some of the best cafes and roasters I have seen in one city anywhere in the world. I also managed to get past the following cafes and all had amazing espresso coffee, dedication and respect for the bean. Chinatown Coffee Co The Coffee Bar Perigrine Big Bear Café Qualia Sidamo Baked and Wired. Stay tuned NEW YORK up next..
