Some people may think he was talking about Hendrix lighting his guitar on fire at Monterey Pop but most folks think McLean was remembering Jagger and the violence that led to the death at Altamont and the end of the era of love and peace in pop music. From the birth of rock in the age of Buddy Holly as McLean came of age to the end of its golden age when Gilbert OSullivan had the biggest hit of the year. Around that time I wrote a satire on it about Nixon. Pinko Pie was published as one of my columns when I wrote for the S.I. JCC Bulletin. McLean created a masterpiece.
