WE ARE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE OUTCOME OF A PROPOSAL to put the Mendocino County Animal Shelter’s (MCAS) operation under the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department (MCSD). It is now part of the Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency. WE BELIEVE IT IS BEST TO LEAVE THINGS THE WAY THEY ARE FOR THE WELFARE OF OUR COUNTY’S ANIMALS. We deal often with the staff at this shelter and we know them to be 100% for the animals there. They do many things that ordinary intake shelters don’t do. Their charges are lucky, indeed, to have so many staff and volunteers who do their best to be creative and conscientious. We believe that the proposed change will be a huge loss for the animals at this shelter. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND CONVEY YOUR OPINIONS TO THE APPROPRIATE PEOPLE. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING AT THIS IMPORTANT ISSUE. THE WELFARE OF OUR COUNTY’S IMPOUNDED ANIMALS IS ON THE LINE!! TIME TO ACT IS NOW. Lots of information and useful links! THINGS YOU CAN DO: 1. familiarize yourself with the subject. 2. sign the on-line petition 3. contact the members of the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors 4. write a letter to the editor for the local (Ukiah) newspaper 5. pass the word! Now for details: This proposal merits the very careful attention by all those interested in this area’s animal welfare, particularly dogs and cats. We here at Bones are intimately familiar with the current operation of this Shelter, and have been for many years. We enjoy a compatible, cooperative and friendly relationship with the staff there and are often able to help with dogs and cats in need of our Rescue’s services and abilities. We have never found care or concern to be lacking for those animals who are intakes at this facility. The County’s Animal Control activities are currently carried out by law enforcement by MCSD and we agree with that. However, operation of the County Shelter (MCAS) has been, for years, carried out as a part of the Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency. We see no reasons whatsoever to make any changes here. We see the current MCAS operation to be as good as it can be, given budgetary constraints that affect every public intake shelter in this country. Those budgetary constraints will always be present, no matter which agency is in charge. The people who now and have run our County Shelter have the best interests of the intake animals at heart and do their best to give them the care and consideration they need. We are not convinced that putting the MCAS operation under law enforcement will achieve the same results. There are a few shelters in California which have enjoyed a greater success in adoptions and saving lives of intakes once they were removed from law enforcement operation. This is not to say that law enforcement can’t do the job that other agencies can; it’s just that law enforcement is especially suited for law enforcement, not animal shelter operations. The many volunteers who have helped to make the MCAS the success it is (high adoption rates, spay-neuter outreach, working with dogs to enhance their adoptability, low euthanasia rates) have said they will not work, even if invited, at a shelter run by the MCSD. And, even if they did wish to work at a shelter run by law enforcement, they and their currently very successful programs may not be welcome. There are many facets to this situation and it is extremely important for the welfare of the Mendocino County community and its animals, that people who are concerned about this become familiar with the various aspects. It is also very important for those who are concerned, to convey their opinions and thoughts to the members of the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors. Those individuals, and their contact information, are listed here. Please read about this issue and make your opinions known! . You can also contact a few other individuals and a local newspaper, and sign an on-line petition.
