WE PAID A VISIT TO IVY DODDS. Telephone rang and Carol answered - TopicsExpress

WE PAID A VISIT TO IVY DODDS. Telephone rang and Carol answered it. She was talking to a woman on the phone who wanted me to come and fix her hanging door to the front. Just before that, Carol was telling me that she wants me to meet a black woman name Rita. Carol started talking on the phone using the name Rita and we were both invited on Saturday for Christmas dinner and I would be paid to fix the front door of her house, she wanted to speak to me. Carol said, here speak to Rita. I called hello Rita, but the woman said, it’s not Rita, it’s Ivy Dodds in Vulture Street. You know where I live and Mr Harris next door around the corner? Yes I do was my answer. If you bring Carol tomorrow morning, you may be able to fix my front door, I know you can do it, nobody else can. I’ll pay you cash plus you and Carol will have Christmas dinner that I’m going to cook and you can have snacks of coffee and biscuits or cordial all day. I accepted and promised, tomorrow morning after breakfast, we can catch two buses, one to the city and the Dutton Park bus to the State High school and we just cross the corner straight to you. Right she said, I’ll see you in the morning. Nobody ever invited me when I was living with Ron Carol said. That’s because they were the bad old days I said, not good. We went in the morning. I led her there, she said to Ivy, I hope May Angus doesn’t come and cause trouble. Don’t worry about her Ivy said, after what she did to you before when she tried to kill you she’s not allowed near this house. She only hangs around Bela Byra around the corner now but she’s not allowed in my place because she’s bad. She’s the Devil’s Advocate Carol said and Ivy was in agreement with her. I got the door off the hinges, changed the place of the top hinge bit further down and rehung the door doing a perfect job that was done within an hour using new screws. Ivy paid me five dollars because that’s all she could afford. We had coffee and biscuits for snacks through the day and Christmas dinner was given us with roasted chicken and baked potatoes and pumpkin. Carol told Ivy how I cooked the goose the previous week using the microwave oven at home and that I cook very nice food. Even a big catfish or an eel I may catch sometimes, nothing is wasted because we have to eat to survive. We had a nice day out but when the time came to leave, I put a bookmark in the book that I was reading and we went out through the front door, there was May Angus walking around drunk. When she saw me and Carol, she yelled out at Carol, you, I thought I killed you that time. Don’t talk to her I said, let her go to hell. May started screaming abuses and ran for her dear life while we crossed the road and took a bus home.
