Because we survived the middle passage and endured the crucible of slavery We speak your name, We speak your name From the time of Reconstruction and From the time of Jim Crow and From the time of The Northern Migration and From the time of The Civil Rights Movement and To the election of President Barrack Hussein Obama We speak your name, We speak your name We speak the name of your grandmother DELLA ARRINGTON, who left Rocky Mount, North Carolina We speak your name of your grandfather WILLIAM WHITEHURST, who left Williamston, North Carolina Because you are a strong sister, born of a strong father, who was born of a strong father,we celebrate your strength We speak your name , We speak your name We speak the name of your grandmother EDITH CLIFTON, who left Chester, South Carolina We speak the name of your grandfather ISAIAH GLENN, who left Chincoteague, Virginia Because you are a good mother, born of a good mother, who was born of a good mother, we celebrate your goodness We speak your name, We speak your name Therefore, we speak the name of your parents Marvin Alexander and Berwindale Joy Having Been Consummated By The Grace of God, On Friday, November 20, 1959 Glenda Joy Whitehurst Was born as the fourth child at the Pottstown Hospital Bursting into humanity with all the hopes, aspiration and dreams of an African princess blood within her, It is hereby recorded in The Pottstown Mercury that on ON DECEMBER 6, 1960 Glenda was admitted to the Pottstown Hospital ON SEPTEMBER 8, 1962 Glenda enjoyed an outing at 631 Beech Street with Roslyn Whitehurst, Cordova Glenn, Marvin Whitehurst Jr., Bambi Whitehurst, Junius Leisure Jr., and Lanette Leisure ON AUGUST 8, 1963 Glenda won prizes at a Doll show held at the happy hill playground along with Antionette Farmer, Roslyn Whitehurst, Cynthia and Valerie Miller, Sylvia Hespeth, Lance Dorsey, Tina Ruffin and Barry, Christine and Paula Nealy ON DECEMBER 26, 1964 Glenda rendered two musical selections with Roslyn, Bambi Whitehurst, Cordova Glenn and Lanette Leisure on a special holiday childrens program at Second Baptist Church, Washington Road and Hale Street ON JULY 23, 1965 Glenda along with 345 youths participated in and was awarded prizes at the Hobby and Hat show contest held at Franklin playground ON JULY 29, 1966 Glenda won three prizes as six busloads of Girl Guides went to 702 North Adams Street where Mrs. David Simmons hosted a contest ON NOVEMBER 20, 1967 Glenda Joy Whitehurst, 171 Sheridan Street turned 7 years old ON MARCH 2, 1968 Glenda, age 7, and Shirlene, age 5, took a spring fling with their father Marvin Whitehurst, at the Happy Hill playground ON JULY 19, 1968 Glenda represented the Happy Hill playground in a Bicycle Rodeo sponsored by the Pottstown School Districts Recreation Department ON APRIL 10, 1970 Glenda Recited Poetry ON AUGUST 26, 1971 Glenda was assigned to homeroom 311 at the Central Junior High School ON JULY 27, 1972 Glenda represented Happy Hill Playground and got second place at a softball accuracy and bike rodeo competition at the Pottstown Olympics ON APRIL 6, 1973 Glenda participated in The Junior High Festival Band Concert with Bambi Whitehurst as part of the twirling corps ON APRIL 24, 1975 Glenda, along with Mona Smith, Sue Laski, and Cidra Thompson won the 440 relay over West Chester East ON AUGUST 18, 1975 Glenda was assigned to Mr. Armato class, Room 234 at the Pottstown Senior High School ON FEBRUARY 17, 1976 Glenda was placed on the honor roll for the second marking period in the 11th grade ON AUGUST 23, 1976 Glenda was assigned to Room 234 at the Pottstown Senior High ON OCTOBER 5, 1978 Glenda Joy Whitehurst gave birth to Quiana Windale Whitehurst Because you were the best mother, born of the best mother, Who was born of the best mother, we celebrate your excellence We speak your name, We speak your name Because you were a providing mother, born of a providing father, who was born of a providing father, we celebrate your fidelity We speak your name, We speak your name Because you make us smile when a smile is missing, We embrace your very namesake JOY Because you make us laugh when laughter is lacking, We embrace your very namesake JOY Because the JOY of the Lord is our strength We embrace your very namesake JOY We thank our God for the joy we have in you and we stand before you now, your legacy your flesh and blood in all of our collective DNA, knowing that we are a family, that has been bettered truer, and deeper, because God has allowed us to speak your name Glenda Joy Satterwhite We speak your name We speak your name
