WEATHER UPDATE: Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 10:15 AM Flash Flood Watches remain in effect for approximately the central third of Arkansas, from west central Arkansas through the central part of the state into parts of eastern Arkansas. The area of heavy rain in western Arkansas at mid-morning will push toward the east-southeast and will probably begin to weaken around midday or early afternoon. Additional showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop in southern Arkansas from this afternoon into this evening, and then continue into Wednesday morning. Some heavy rain and maybe some localized flooding can be expected with these storms in southern Arkansas, but for the most part, this rain will be falling over places that have not had much rain lately. Over the next 24 hours, then, the heaviest rain in Arkansas is likely to occur south of a line from Fort Smith to Brinkley, and the threat of the heaviest rain will gradually sink toward the south with time. Some 1 to 2 inch totals will certainly occur, and there could easily be some amounts in the 3 to 4+ inch range. As far as chances for severe weather go, I think the atmosphere through the middle of the state has already been pretty well worked-over by showers and thunderstorms. Thus, the threat of severe weather is likely to end up being in areas farther south (generally south of a line from Mena to Star City) where showers have not occurred yet. So, for this afternoon and evening, there could be a small number of severe thunderstorms south of the aforementioned line, with damaging winds being the main severe weather threat. I think this whole weather situation will be winding down by mid-morning Wednesday.
