WEDNESDAYS WITH WILLIE - #710 November 19, 2014 “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” ---Jimmy Dean COMMENT: Sailing really is a great metaphor for living life. To learn to sail, you must go through certain disciplines that teach you how to handle whatever comes up. Same for learning how to live life. You won’t always find yourself in calm seas, so you must be sure, before that fact, that you know what to do. An important part in sailing is how to handle your sails. In life it is how to handle your mind. The thoughts that you create in your mind will be a preview of the destination you desire in your life. That being said, it seems only reasonable to create fun destinations, and then sail off knowing that you can handle any storms that come up along the way. So, how about deciding to become an exceptional sailor of life. You’ll have a lot more fun, and end up right where you wanted to go. “Discipline is the refining fire by which talent becomes ability.” ---Roy L. Smith COMMENT: In my career in sales, it took me a few years to discover how important discipline was in my daily activities. Finally I realized that discipline was the determining factor of success in no matter what I wanted to do, whether it was sales, skiing, golf, or becoming a better person. Discipline sounds like something your high school principal might have imposed on you to teach you a lesson. Well, in this case, it is kind of like that. If you want to turn your talent into ability, you have to become the principal. Discipline requires that you step out of your comfort zone, and do what you have to do, no matter how you feel. Gold Medal Olympic athletes didn’t become great by training just when they felt like it. The road to success is arduous at times, but it is the only way your talent will turn into ability.
