WESLEY SO, NOT SO GOOD IN ROUND 7 OF TATA STEEL WAR. Wesley (Elo 2719) of the Philippines was beaten by No. 1 Seed Levon Aronian (Elo 2812) of Armenia in 36 moves of an English game. This was the first loss of So in this extraordinary tournament among hydramasters, the unofficial title given to grandmasters having Elo rating above 2700. Wesley and Aronian are the fiercest of rivals in Tata Steel chess tournament, perhaps the strongest tournament after the World Chess Championship. The last time So and Aronian clashed ended in a draw. With the loss of So to consistent leader Aronian and the draw of Anish Giri (Elo 2734) of the Netherlands against Boris Gelfand (Elo 2777) of Israel, the highest-rated Filipino chesser fell from second to a tie for third place with two others. Sergey Karjakin (Elo 2759) of Russia won over Arkadij Naiditsh (Elo 2718) of Germany to join Giri in second place. Tying with So in third were Leinier Dominguez Perez (Elo 2754) of Cuba and Fabiano Caruana (Elo 2782) of Italy. Perez earned a half point after drawing his game with Hikaru Nakamura (Elo 2789) of the USA. Caruana halved the point with Pentala Harikrishna (Elo 2706) of India. There are still four rounds remaining in this 12-man championship. In fourth place after seven rounds are: Harikrishna and Nakamura in fourth place with 3 points; Loek Van Wely of Netherland and Richard Rapport of Hungary in fifth with 2 points; Gelfand with 1.5 points at sixth; and Naiditsch at 1 point in seventh.
