WHALE WATCHING OR KILLING? Today thousands of people , all around the world, will set off to work by boat. They will take tourists to meet local whales and dolphins with which they have developed an ongoing mutual relationship. Both species , human and cetacean, are transmitting this culture generationally. It just gets better, as at HERVEY BAY in Queensland. Home to port at days end will come thousands of visitors whose hearts are swollen with wonder and happiness at their new experience of ocean life. Because the whales reward good manners with their presence and often, benign responses, this becomes a sustainable industry, and whole towns have been transformed. by it, as at Kaikoura, NZ, where indigenous people operate in a major way. This same day men, armed with explosive spears have searched the ocean for whales to kill, or with nets to capture smaller ones to net for imprisonment and exhibition.. History proves this is not sustainable. quite often the whalers convert to whale watching, because it is a reliable pursuit, in tune with the growing global consensus.
