WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR THANKSGIVING? Over the last several - TopicsExpress

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR THANKSGIVING? Over the last several days, we’ve all been asked that question. Yet, today’s society and culture is more secular than ever. A genuine “giving of thanks to God” during our annual Thanksgiving holiday has been mostly abandoned. It’s appalling that for so many, Thanksgiving has been diminished to nothing more than eating turkey, sleeping in for 4 days, watching football and parades, or knocking someone down at Wal-Mart on “Black Friday” to get that last $99 flat screen TV! In 1863, President Abe Lincoln officially recognized the last Thursday of November “as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father.” According to history, the new Pilgrim settlers in America gave thanks to God for numerous blessings including their newfound religious freedom. Key to their Thanksgiving celebration was prayer, sermons, and songs of praise. These new Americans were profoundly religious and spent 3 days praying and feasting. Thus, the true meaning of Thanksgiving focuses upon a relationship between God and man, acknowledging Him as our loving, faithful Father. Let us not forget that God loved us first and through His amazing love, He made an unimaginable sacrifice for each one of us. (John 3:16). We should earnestly give Him thanks for the endless mercy and favor He has shown. For the child of God, Thanksgiving is an attitude of the heart. Look inward and reflect on His goodness. Have a safe, joyous, and prayerful Thanksgiving! Cicely
