WHAT I LEARNED FROM CHEMOTHERAPY RELATED ANEMIA When I was in College, I used to complain more often than I wanted to na pagod na ako. Lagi na lang. Gawa tayo case pres! Pagod na ako! Nuod tayo sine! Pagod na ako! It was not until later in my studies in nursing that I realized that I was one big fat lazy pale boy. I realized that whenever I say na pagod na ako, I am limiting myself to something that i did not yet experience. Pagod na ako, wala pa nga. Kung baga, I called it ANTICIPATORY TIREDNESS. With deep regrets, ngayon ko naisip ba ang dami kong pinalipas na moments dahil sa fictional pagod ko. The biggest wake up call na na receive ko was when I took care of a cancer patient undergoing a course of chemo. After handling his care plan, nahiya na ako gamitin ang term na PAGOD. Chemo basically destroys most of your rapid dividing cells, including those found in your BONE MARROW. The bone marrow is poetically considered as thw birth place of your blood. One of his babies is the RED BLOOD CELL, which in overall gives us the necesarry chemical processes that makes us active. It is the one that carries our OXYGEN around. So basically, my patient was always tired all the time. I remember he said to me when I asked how he was, ito ang reply niya: "Alam mo yung pakirandam nang ginising ka nang 3AM tapos walang dahilan? Ganun ang pakirandam ko the whole day" He said that to me with the very distinct mix of anger and sadness. From then on, nahiya na ako gamitin ang term na PAGOD. I had a patient na no matter how many times he sleeps all day, he did not recover his energy, not even enough energy to appreciate na he is still alive. I had him to thank, kasi siya ang boses sa isip ko every time na overtime ako sa work, pagod ako sa biyahe or mahapdi na mata ko kakabasa. This is why I loved NURSING. 4 years of nursing education did not make me smarter, It made me a better person. Although it pains me to say it, we should learn from other peoples experiences, whether it may be unfortunate or not. -Sir Jev Belardo
