WHAT MAKES PAINT ON CANVAS ART? This is a questions that has been argued many times. One simple answer is..."Art is created when the perceived value of the end result is greater than the value of the paint and canvas". Leo Tolstoy wrote a whole book on the subject of distinguishing "art" from "non-art". The book is "WHAT IS ART? In it he says that "art is a union between the artist and viewer that allows the viewer to feel and experience what the art put into the work to the extent that the viewer feels that it is their own experience or feelings." He goes on to say that the stronger this infection, the better the art, and that the degree of quality is dependent on three conditions: 1. The individuality of the feeling being transmitted 2. The clarity of expression 3. The sincerity of the artist The real work of art destroys, in the consciousness of the viewer, the separation between themselves and the artist. I am certain this happens with art and I have experienced from both sides, but sometimes the colors and shapes may just look good over the couch and bring the room together. I guess it is great when it does all those things.
