WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? By Shaun Cairns (SFG Master) Why do we do what we do? What gets you out of bed in the morning? For me it is to impact people’s lives through improving their ability to control their own physical movement. From this greater control comes increased self confidence. And this increased self confidence has a profound effect on their relationship with life in the present and future. It took a 5 year old little boy with Muscular Dystrophy to teach me this. Working with Janpaul has shown me that the discussions around strength, its various aspects and whether it is a quality worth pursuing first, second or last is purely academic. Running 5 kilometres doesn’t mean squat when you don’t have the strength to hold your body in the right position while running even 5 meters. He highlighted the fact that before we can move a lot we need to be able to move well and under control. This takes strength. Not explosive or max or endurance strength, just the strength to move. And strength is what we are focusing on with improved body control being the expression of this strength. Do we use kettlebells? Yes. Whenever we need a finishing line or a set of goals Janpaul picks up the 10lb kettlebells and puts them out. A little bit of deadlifting and farmers walks. That is all the weight training needed. Do we have fun? Absolutely. Without the element of fun how do you keep a 5 year old engaged enough to want to come twice a week month after month? Actually that goes for all ages. It has to be fun for everyone. This is what motivates me. SO WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
