WHAT WAS THAT STONE? Our rock was an angel - an angel that has been defaced, literally. Iconoclasts knocked the face off, probably in the riots of 1566. It came from a Dutch church that was later demolished entirely. Radical Protestants like the Pilgrims approved of such destruction. The Pilgrims minister, John Robinson, objected to the retention in the Church of England of liturgical beauty from Catholic tradition. [Y]our temples, especially your cathedrals and mother churches, stand, still, in their proud majesty, possessed by archbishops and lord bishops, [...] and furnished with all manner of pompous and superstitious monuments, as carved and painted images, massing copes and surplices, chanting and organ music, and many other glorious ornaments of the Romish harlot ... (discussed on p. 217 of my book, Strangers and Pilgrims, Travellers and Sojourners - Leiden and the Foundations of Plymouth Plantation). We have the damaged sculpture in the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum to illustrate the revolutionary attitude of the Pilgrims and their anti-Catholic friends towards the churches out of which they had emerged. The Pilgrims were anti-traditionalist, anti-establishment radicals. Their ideas posed a real threat to the state church.
