WHERE IS THE FUTURE OF NEW NEPALI CINEMA? I would like to raise a common question to all of the friends in this group- where is the future of New Nepali Cinema today? I watched “Uma” the second day of it’s releasing date. Honestly speaking, Uma is an outstanding Nepali film up to the date that I have watched until now. I am neither trying to compare Uma with any other previously made Nepali films nor trying to say that the other films are bad. But Uma has that production/ aesthetic value and realism that I might not find in any other films. But unfortunately, Uma went out from all the theaters in 3rd week. I am just wondering what was the reason that this film did not go alone. Did this film recover its investment? I have another questions to the film journalist friends who are continuously doing advocacy that this film is good- that film is bad… is your effort really working in present scenario? I have seen my film journalist friend confused and they are making audience confuse as well because there were a numbers of film highly media hyped in recent past and those films were totally flop/crab. So because of such immaturity in professionalism, people don’t trust whatever you write and they don’t go to the theater and film like Uma gets in trouble! At the other side, the monopoly of theater owners. NO BOX OFFICE :) Even a low budget films are not being able to recover!!! None of the films are going more that two weeks… In such scenario- I am also confused whether I should make a film or not? I am in big dilemma!! By the way, I am a young filmmaker recently done Master’s degree in filmmaking from South Korea. I came back last year and have made couple of short films. Now I am thinking for a feature film but because of such scenario I am really confused what approach I should follow! It’s not a matter of finding someone with money who has no idea of understanding an appropriate film but its matter of leading him across with his investments. Therefore, I don’t know if it is a good idea- we should think of making no budget independent films, which may have raw but still an international production value that we can sell to international market. If there is anyone interested out there with the passion inbox me and lets create something alternative :) Cheers!
