WHERE TO DEAR DAVAO ORIENTAL? Wracked by Pablo in 2012 and more Pablos to come (:(, high disaster risk of communities already ascertained particularly for the eastcoast (Boston, Baganga, Cateel, Taraggona, etc), why is our government (national and local) allowing non-stop mining in these high risk areas? Is it not a death warrant? These government officials come and go as they please, they can easily escape from the danger zones, but the rest, majority with no options, are left behind. Who are to be made accountable? Black sand mining galore obviously with no one researching or knowledgeable about its negative effect, or just keeping mum; mining operations in Luzon municipality with non stop movement of trucks day and night with NO plate numbers and people gradually being displaced from their lands thru intimidation and harassment; etc. Who are to defend the rights of the locals if not their elected leaders? The tragic fact remains that these political leaders are the same economic investors. It is chicken and egg for disaster risk management when your own government protectors are the source of your own insecurity. Everything else is rhetorical. --------------------------------------------------- Mining IPO- Rumors are rife that a mining company in Mindanao will soon go public after its discovery of huge gold and copper reserves in its concession area. It is said that some engineers and other technical people have jumped ship from a leading mining company, drawn by the prospect of the firm’s rapid growth in the years ahead. According to the grapevine, the initial public offering, or IPO, would probably be in the vicinity of P12 a share although this could very well go higher as everyone is expected to scramble to get a first crack at the company’s enormous mineral reserves. The underwriter who will handle the IPO is the same fellow who successfully launched the Double Dragon issue. The mining company operates in Davao Oriental.—Daxim L.
