WHO SAID AMATEURISM SHALL NOT BE COMMERCIALISED ? This was an extremely unusual advertisement, firstly featuring a cyclist, then it being an amateur - Gary Sutton. It was full page colour in Womans Day magazine in 1980. Possibly it was after winning his World Championship (Australian colours and medal) although it makes no mention of that. Undoubtedly it was officially condoned and the fee went to charity ( or the ACF ! ) Of course bike shops in their advertisements were long renowned for subtly including photos of their “amateur” riders with a caption of congratulations for winning some big race.
