WHY DO YOGA PEOPLE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT BREATH? IS IT IMPORTANT FOR PAIN RELEIF? If you think about your most tense moment, stressful moment, you may have felt all of your body clench, no memory of breathing at that time, and immense concentration on that situation. Things like tension and our breathing let us know what kind of experience we are having. If your breath is shallow, quick, non-existent in your experience it’s likely that a sense of ease, comfort, and some relaxation are also not present. This may be a source or enabler to pain. When it comes to any source of pain, if we can have control over it… we want to make sure we do that. Efficient breathing is one of those. Not only does efficient breathing bring more oxygen into our body so we can operate more efficiently, but it also assists in muscle relaxation, in having the neurological response that slows us down. Some sense of relaxation is needed whether you want ease when standing, lying down or doing activity with flow. So it’s not that you shouldn’t have stress in your life or immense challenge, but we do need to take time to recover and come back to our natural self if we have lost it during an event. It takes only a few moments for our breath to come back to normal breathing and it takes only a few moments for our body to release tension if we give it that time. What you may also find when feeling the breath is that the things we were so immensely focused on may not be as important as we thought. May not have that urgency, may not bug us as much. Why would that be? For me, it gives me enough space from what I have been thinking of, it gives me enough feeling of wellness that I see that what I have been thinking about just may not be worth it. Pondering over whether something I did was right or wrong just may not be worth it because it doesn’t feel good. I would rather stay in this feeling of breath and relaxation then be right or wrong… or whatever the situation may be. I may just want to acknowledge the situation (the multiple lessons or possibilities) and look to start new. So the breath is so important for relaxation, for releasing muscular tension, and for bringing us back to our natural efficient state. From here you can make actions with clarity and ease, instead of tension and urgency. Decisions or work may need to be done quickly but we don’t have to internally be that urgency. alignmentyoga.ca
