WHY IS IT OKAY TO DISRESPECT OUR CULTURE?: This Chicano Brown Beret for the sake of this commentary is talking about Dia De Los Muertos - (Day of the Dead is a beautiful ritual in which Mexicans happily and lovingly remember their loved relatives that have died). Why is it okay to disrespect our culture, profit from it, twist its meaning, try to steal the rights to it but yet not want to accept its Raza as equals, as those having a born Historical right to migrate throughout this land without prejudice? Why is it okay for Beer & Liquor Companies to market their snake oil under the cloak of making it go hand in hand with this day? Why is it okay for party promoters to market their parties under that name as if they are honoring this day? Why do costume makers and stores feel it is okay to profit from cheap-ass costumes and items relating to this day(most of which are made in CHINA)? Why is it that many of our own people allow, endorse and feed into this but yet pretend to be proud Chicanos(as)/Mexicanos(as)? Hmmmmmmm WHY? Most importantly, why isnt the same thing done for lets say The Holocaust Day, Twin Tower Day, Atomic Bomb Day, Pearl Harbor Day, Kill Kennedy & Lincoln Day etc etc etc.? Wasnt Halloween Day good enough? Hmmmmmmm WHY? Well just remember this as you get ready to don your Dia De Los Muertos costume(made in China), go to that Dia De Los Muertos pardi(at clubs having nothing to really do with Raza) and drink that Booze(Bunkwiser etc etc) that you have just helped bury your culture and those that have passed for which this day DIA DE LOS MUERTOS was Founded. p.s. remember every right, every custom, every inch of self respect you give up leads to the non existence of who you were.
