WHY VIDEO GAMES ARE ART I honestly wanted to give Roger Ebert a chance in explaining why he felt that video games are not art, so I looked up an essay that he wrote. Lets just say, I was significantly less than impressed. For starters, he never actually explains WHY. The best he can come up with us, No one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great poets, filmmakers, novelists and poets. And what exactly would make a game worthy, other than subjective opinion? Is there some form of measurement that we have all agreed on that I am unaware of? Then theres his definition of art. Oy vey. He says, I tend to think of art as usually the creation of one artist. The man who made his living critiquing MOVIES thinks that art is usually made by a single person. MOVIES. Anyways, the definition art is very simple. The official Websters definition of art is something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings. So yes, video games are absolutely a legitimate form of art. They are created with imagination and skill, they express important ideas and feelings, and although beauty is subjective, enough people think that video games are beautiful for it to qualify. The Last Of Us. A perfect example of art. Graphically beautiful. Emotionally moving story. An important expression of human nature. Required lots of skill to make. ART. BY DEFINITION. Does EVERY game express important ideas? Of course not. So what? Are movies no longer art because Friday The 13th exists? Video games qualify as art, and I have yet to hear any valid argument to prove otherwise.
