WOMEN INTEGRAL TO BUSINESS Women are integral in entrepreneurship because they are naturally ethical which propels them to make right decisions in business. A life coach from UK, Ms Jenny Garrett said this through Skype at the Lift as you rise-Women Grassroots Action Towards Entrepreneurship event at Cresta in Gaborone on April 26. Ms Garrett said women were important in business because they thought of the future generation thus making business decisions with sustainability at the core. Women, she said, also collaborated as they did not have a ‘top dog mentality’ which was important for business growth. Ms Garrett implored the women in attendance to pride themselves in their uniqueness and backgrounds which she said were a part of one’s brand and could make the business successful and memorable. She stated that mentorship was a key in entrepreneurship as women needed guidance and support. “Time will never be enough, family and commitments will always be there but make use of what you have,” she said. In her remarks, Dr Habaudi Hubona said she fought against the odds to get her surgeon qualification at a time when the job was mainly dominated by men, making her the first female surgeon in Botswana in 1984. She said there was need for the new generation to work harder even though it seemed it was nearer achieving gender equality. Dr Hobona said entrepreneurship and politics were intertwined therefore there was need for more women in politics who would contribute towards laws for the future of the country. The programme director from Tokafala, Ms Ineke Van Der Weijden said in most cases people failed to start-up businesses demotivated by the thought of finances. However Ms Weijden said although finances were critical, aspiring entrepreneurs had to make a plan, strategies and explore non-loan solutions first. An asset manager at Stanlib, Ms Sethebe Manake said many people had access to property but failed to invest in it, saying property could be used to sustain lifestyles and businesses if invested properly. The event was organised by 360Affairs events. The organiser, Ms Ontlametse Mogofu said it was meant to inspire women in entrepreneurship and aspiring business women. (BOPA)
