WOUND VAC: NC Origin and Symphony of Funny Sound - TopicsExpress

WOUND VAC: NC Origin and Symphony of Funny Sound Effects! Knowing how little boys think theres nothing funnier than imitating certain bodily noises, I have some young piano students who would get a giant kick out of the sound effects coming from my thighs Wound VAC. Out of the blue, the VAC begins suctioning excess fluid from the wound, accompanied by a hilarious symphony of raspberries at their finest. Since its introduction in the US in 1995, V.A.C. Therapy has changed the way wounds are healed. VAC Therapy promotes healing by delivering negative pressure (a vacuum) at the wound site through a patented dressing. This helps draw wound edges together, removes excess fluid, and is believed to stimulate granulation tissue growth. In the late 1980s Dr. Louis Argenta, a plastic surgeon working at Wake Forest, right here in the NC Triad, thought of the concept of a vacuum while thinking how he was going to close a difficult wound a patient had. With the help of his lab manager, a bio-medical engineer, the two developed the concept into product. Wake Forest agreed to pay them half of any royalties. Wake Forest then licensed the product to KCI in 1993. BY 1999, KCI built the business in to a 50 million dollar a year empire. During this time frame, my orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Christopher Blackman, trained at Wake Forrest. He has told me many times how Wake Forest med students practiced applying wound vacs on everything that moved. And Im glad they did!
