Waitaras Thelma Luxton was awarded a Citizens Award last week. Read why here - Thelma works tirelessly behind the scenes for many clubs and organisations, and the whole of the North Taranaki community has at some time benefited for Thelma’s enthusiasm and drive to make the area a better place in which to reside. Thelma became a charter member of Soroptimist in November 1984 and has served as President, Secretary and Treasurer. In 2008 Thelma was awarded an Honorary Life Membership for the Region New Zealand Central. She has travelled extensively throughout the world to many Soroptimist Charter ceremonies, conferences and conventions, and has been active in the formation of new clubs and instrumental in the organisations of Taranaki conferences. Thelma was instrumental in the gifting of Te Amo Oranganui by the Waitara Maori community to NZ Soroptimists. The cloak was worn for the first time in 2004 and has been worn proudly on many NZ Soroptimist occasions all over the world. Thelma has been a faithful servant of cricket since 1952, where she started as scorer for her school’s first X1 boys’ cricket team and later became the official scorer of all games at Pukekura Park – including World Cup games, visiting international games and New Zealand Youth test. Thelma has held roles of Secretary, Treasurer, Chairperson and the ‘make things happen person’ and is a life member of the Waitara Cricket Club. In 1991 and 1999 the Taranaki Cricket Association awarded her the Stainton Trophy for Services to Taranaki Cricket. She has been a volunteer at the North Taranaki Community House in Waitara for more than 18 months and is the editor of the house newsletter. She willingly gives her time to prepare rosters for the volunteers and puts herself on duty many times in the month. Thelma has been involved in the formation of the North Taranaki Healthcare Trust, an organisation that raised more than $1 million to establish a Health Centre of North Taranaki. She presently serves as a trustee. She has also given up her time to be Secretary of the Urenui Bach Owners from the Urenui Domain, she is the present Secretary/Treasurer for the Waitara Bowling Club, and has been of the Motunui Royal Women’s. Thelma is also Chairman of the Massey Trust. This trust was set up after a fire at the Waitara High School Library back in the ’80s, and the trust administers funds for school requirements such as books, sports gear and sports uniforms etc. For many years Thelma has been actively involved in the business community of Waitara and was Secretary of Beyond 2000, the business association of Waitara, where she spent most of her time organising and running promotions for the benefit of the town.
