Walmart contends that over 475,000 of its U.S. workers earn more than $25,000 a year. Given that number, a high estimate by most standards, an overwhelming majority of the company’s 1.3 million U.S. workers fall below the poverty line. Walmart also contends that its average hourly pay rate is $12.78. The company arrived at the figure by leaving out part-time workers and adding in salaries for management. Our Walmart, a non-union group that is supporting Walmart strikers, says that a more realistic average is closer to $9.00 than $12.00. Our Walmart has called on the company to pay workers a living wage of at least $25,000 a year.
