The Conservatives are using the following smear/negative campaign against Mark: - The Conservative Party is said to have spent more than £50,000 so far on letters to constituents and targeted internet advertising. - The decision by the Prime Minister and Grant Shapps, the Tory chairman, to repeatedly accuse Mr Reckless of lying about his defection amounts to a “war of psychological attrition” designed to deter other defectors, Ukip said. “The idea is to make it so unpleasant that he feels shattered and broken by the end of it. - Ukip sources have claimed that a group claiming to be an independent polling company is ringing constituents in Rochester and Strood asking whether they are “aware” of an incident involving Mr Reckless four years ago. - MPs have been ordered to go three times over the next month, and told to register their dates in advance with whips. Mr Gove last night urged them to send members of their Conservative Associations with the words: “The more the merrier.” - Dozens of Conservatives and ministers will today descend on Rochester in the first major day of campaigning in the most important by-election in recent history. Today’s campaign will be followed by a “massive” day of action on Saturday, with 1,000 activists travelling by coach from central London.
