He and two other men were convicted and sentenced to death based on the sole testimony of a 12 yr-old kid, pressured by police, who later recanted and was not even at the scene of the crime. One of these men was 20 days from execution. And now Ricky Jackson is the 148th person exonerated from death row (since 1973). This is what he had to say: The English language does not have words to express what I am feeling right now. For sure, it is hard to even imagine what it would feel like. He lost four decades of his life, and was nearly executed. This is the latest travesty of justice when it comes to the death penalty in America. We can do better than killing to show that killing is wrong. And we can do better than sentencing three men to death based on the testimony of a 12-year old kid. We can do better than robbing an innocent man of 39 years of his life. Lets imagine a world without the death penalty. And lets not just imagine it… lets organize, and strategize and build that world together now. P.S. Oh…. and when asked how he felt about Eddie Vernon, the 12-year old witness in the case (now a grown man), Mr. Jackson only had grace-filled, forgiving things to say -- I wish him a good life. I dont hate him. Hes a grown man today, he was just a boy back then. They used him. It took a lot of courage to do what he did.
