Warning: An opinion follows. There is sometimes a temptation for some people to criticize teachers who get snow days, whilst some other professions are still required to go to work (I know of a few people who also get snow days outside of the realm of education). I have always been perplexed at the fact that some in society view the fortune of others as somehow unjust. Yes, teachers get snow days and summers off. They also get countless hours of work every weekend and fifteen hour work days during the week. I do not begrudge Dentists who are only open four days a week, nurses who work four day shifts, or mailmen who get holidays off. I am glad they get additional time to be with their families and exist not simply as workers but as mothers, fathers, friends, etc. On a snow day, would we rather have more people on the roads in wintry conditions? I think our society would be much better off if we stopped viewing the positive fortunes of others as a threat to ourselves and merely found happiness in our own situation while celebrating those positive events in the lives of our fellow man.
