Warning... I am going to vent a bit here. You might want to just hit the delete button now! If I am to understand the thinking of folks like Dick Cheney, the danger to our country and way of life is that we actually disclosed and discussed our misbehavior with political prisoners. Any possibility that perhaps the blame should go to those who perpetuated the behaviors that are being talked about? No torture, no illegal behavior, no discussion? Am I missing the point. It kind of seems like a situation where you beat up your wife. She tells her family about it, and they come looking for you. If she would have just kept her mouth shut, there wouldnt be any problem, right? And now we have the situation in NYC. The mayor points out that there are significant problems with aspects of the behavior of the NYPD. He truthfully states that he has had to have discussions with his bi-racial son on dealing with the police. Are those points really disputable? He has not disparaged all, or even most of the NYPD. And now, the union chief says that the killing of the two police officers is BECAUSE of the mayors discussion. No it isnt. In this particular case, it because a mentally ill man with an extensive arrest history including violence, took his gun and shot two police officers. ...for no reason. Shortly before he shot the police officers, he shot his former girlfriend. The mayors fault as well? More generically, the extended protest movement did not happen because the mayor made some honest statements. It happened because an unarmed man, committing a misdemeanor crime of selling single cigarettes, was killed by a police officer using a dangerous technique specifically prohibited by the NYPD, and the legal system shrugged its shoulders with a so what attitude. I come from a family with a policing tradition. I am not anti-police by any stretch of the imagination. The enemy of the thousands of good, dedicated police officers across this country is NOT the president of the country, the mayor of the city, nor the people in the street protesting. It is the bad cops. Just as in any profession, if those who are doing the job with integrity do not drum out the bad apples in their midst, whistle blowing all the way, then they become unfairly branded. When one of the bad ones gets caught, they significant compound their problem by defending them at all cost. To all of the police officers out there who are doing their job in a fair, honest, straightforward manner.....thank you, thank you, and thank you again. To those who are abusing their position of power, we are watching you. You rank lower in my mind than the common criminal.... we know we have to watch our back with the criminals...you...we are counting on you watching ours.
