[Warning: Kim is about to hop on her soap box.] Some of you will view this post as being politically incorrect, but as Dave Ramsey said, Im just doing the math. Here are the facts. In December, 2012, I was paying Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) $256.06/month for health insurance for myself. In January, I cancelled my Blue Cross policy because as the spouse of someone on active duty in the military, I received benefits through Paul. Anyway, with Paul retiring from the military and having started a new job in the civilian workforce, its time for me to figure out what to do about my insurance... whether to go back to my own policy with BCBS or to add on to Pauls insurance through his new employer. Well folks, after a call to BCBS, I quickly learned we arent in December of 2012 anymore. I about fell out of my chair! The agent asked no medical questions... just based the quote on my age, gender, and household income. The cheapest plan without a penalty for me is $538.08 a month... more than double what I was paying 10 months ago! I asked about the penalty. The agent said that this particular policy meets the federal governments minimum requirements for a healthcare policy. They offer cheaper plans, but with each one of those, I would have to pay a penalty fee to the federal government in the amount of $90 a month because those policies dont meet governmental standards. The cheapest policy with a penalty for me would be $230.14 to BCBS plus $90 to Uncle Sam for a total of $320.14. And remember, thats for sub-par insurance. To make matters worse, insurance premiums are going to go up even more for us Americans in January 2014. Do the math, folks! If you think the stuff going on in Washington wont affect you, just wait! Pray for our nation.
