Warning: The following post involves shameless self-promotion of upcoming Mente Clara happenings. Being in Austin for the entire month of August, after playing gigs in New Mexico, Colorado, and Mexico in June and July, was really nice, summer weather notwithstanding. However, its always more fun to be traveling and playing music, so Im excited to take Mente Clara on the road again. First up, well kick off our tour by playing on Sunday, September 21 at The Sahara Lounge, with our friends Epirus Quartet. Well open up World Jazz Sunday with Epirus Quartet and Mente Clara, at 8:00. After kicking around New York for a couple of days and introducing Aaron and Bruno to the big city, well get down to business on Wednesday, 9/24 at The Shrine, in Harlem. Well play one short set, beginning at 9 PM. On Thursday, 9/25 well try to determine which band member fits into the skinniest jeans, before taking the stage in Williamsburg, at Scholes Street Studio. (My bet is on the former Brooklynite, Donohoe.) Well be joined by Progger (Brian Donohoe Quintet,) beginning at 7:30. Mente Clara & Brian Donohoe Quintet in Brooklyn! That night, well pile into a minivan and head north, to the Hudson Valley. on Friday, 9/26, well do the Mente Clara/Progger thing all over again, in the beautiful theater at Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center, at 7:30. Mente Clara & Brian Donohoe Quinet in Poughkeepsie! Im excited for guitarist Stephen Blum to join us for this gig. Also, earlier that day, well have the great pleasure of working with some young musicians at Roy C. Ketcham High School. Thanks to my old band teacher, Rich Holod, for setting it up. Not in Austin or NY? Not to worry: you can catch us on Jazz at Noon - Lunch with Masumi, on Monday, September 22. Well perform some stuff that you probably havent heard us play before, including tunes by Hermeto, Caio Petrônio, and one of my newer compositions. Contractual obligations with Bob have been quite involved, so I cant yet say whether hell join us for a version of Masumis My Cats or not. Youll just have to tune in to find out.
