Was Intelligence Bureau too misused in Gujarat snooping case? Was Intelligence Bureau (IB) too misused in the recent snooping controversy related to Gujarat CM Narendra Modi? Tapes released by two investigative websites show Modis close aide and then state home minister Amit Shah talking to Gujarat Police officer G L Singhal about posting of IB men around IPS officer Kuldeep Sharmas house. The instruction was purportedly given as IAS officer Pradeep Sharma was staying there. Shah is also purportedly heard talking about interception of Sharmas calls by IB in the tapes released by the websites. The surveillance, as claimed by the websites, was primarily to find out whether Pradeep Sharma, then Bhavnagar municipal chief, was in touch with the woman who was being constantly tailed by Gujarat Police at the alleged instance of Modi. Tapes, whose veracity is not being vouched for by the websites, also show Shah was not only keeping a watch on the movements and phone calls of the woman but even asked police to prevent her from boarding a flight to Mumbai. When she did take a flight, a man was asked to be posted inside the aircraft to ensure she was not out of sight. Some of the conversations recorded in 2009 went like this: Amit Shah: That man had gone from Bhavnagar to Mumbai and is back here. In connection with the matter... we are watching him also. Singhal: Yes yes. Amit Shah: So today, deploy 8-10 men firstly, that man is going to stay at Kuldeeps house... There... then he has called a Bhavnagar municipal car... and the matter... keep a watch the whole night. Singhal: Yes Amit Shah: Call the men... As he will stay here for a day or two and try to begin with her tactics. Singhal: Yes. Amit Shah: I have their conversation and know the nature of their relationship. Singhal: Yes Amit Shah: Get more men or some of your confidantes. Singhal: Sir I have called three men from the crime department. Amit Shah: Two three IB men to watch the other side. Singhal: Yes sir. Amit Shah: And some IB men to intercept calls in the night are to be posted inside. Singhal: Yes yes sir. The mention of IB in the conversation is significant as the agency is already under cloud in connection with the killing of Ishrat Jehan with CBI alleging that it was hand-in-glove with Gujarat Police in the fake encounter and has even charged one of its now-retired officers, Rajinder Kumar, in the case. Tapes also purportedly reveal that Gujarat Police were not just following the womans movement but also attempting to restrict it. Some conversations: Amit Shah: This evening the person is supposed to leave. That is the info with Saheb I mean... Singhal: Yes Sir... the lady, the lady, isnt it sir? Amit Shah: Yes, Check out what flight it could be in the evening. Singhal: Yes sir, I will check it out. Amit Shah: May be GoAir. And has that man reached Bhavnagar? Singhal: Yes sir... I have checked out his location. He reached last night. Amit Shah: If this girl is going to Mumbai, make sure she does not go to Mumbai. Singhal: Yes sir... Amit Shah: Did you understand? And check out the evening flight. Singhal: Right sir. timesofindia.indiatimes/india/Was-Intelligence-Bureau-too-misused-in-Gujarat-snooping-case/articleshow/26225881.cms?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=referral
