Was it treason or just stupidity?... Pfc Bradley Manning was acquitted on charges of aiding the enemy when he released thousands of government documents to Wikileaks. But he was found guilty on six counts of espionage and other offenses that carry a total maximum of 136 years in prison. Open records activists are protesting that this will have a chilling effect on whistleblowers. Critics are upset that it wasn’t worse. But law professor Glenn Reynolds notes that it was always unlikely that he’d be convicted of aiding the enemy, since the Obama Administration won’t even define who America’s enemies are. Manning also can’t claim to be a whistleblower because he didn’t even know what was in the files he released. Many were personal information on the troops. His acquittal on that charge had more to do with cluelessness than intent. And what’s really chilling is that clueless blabbermouths like him will soon have access to all our private medical records.
