Was looking through a lot of old photos last night. Its funny how your way of thinking changes over the years. I was known as a teenager for being able to ride difficult horses. There are so many photos of me on horses and ponies with various noseband/bitting/martingale arrangements. I look back now and think no wonder the horses were difficult! I had all the gear and no idea so to speak. Ten years down the line, simple bits, I do not own a martingale and I wouldnt dream of putting a youngster in any form of restrictive noseband. I break and school for a living now. But no longer are the horses difficult! Its generally plain sailing now, because I have an understanding of how they think, what is comfortable for them and how to make them want to work for me, instead of just making them work, they behave because they choose to, because I dont restrict them, I let them be themselves, I treat them all as individual, and we trust and respect each other. A horse isnt a machine, or any sort of object. Its a living breathing animal that deserves to be treated with respect. I just wish every other horse owner could see that sometimes. . .
