Wasco County Commission race- In the upcoming election we have one position still open. The primary winner BRIDGET BAILEY must face the incumbent again because she fell short of the 50% mark. The incumbent is ROD RUNYON. The Dalles Chronicle recently profiled both the candidates. BRIDGET BAILEY: Bailey: Vision for change. Wasco County Commission candidate Bridget Bailey has a vision and a plan to create a more livable, healthy and business-friendly community... “I grew up in Wasco County and have lived here for more than 30 years,” Bailey said. “I can’t change the world, but in local government, I can make it better. I have experience in agriculture, the largest part of the economy of Wasco County, and I believe my experience will bring a much-needed balance to the commission.” Bailey who also has a background in management at her family’s Orchard View Farms, said, “What I can bring to the commission is the ability to work with the ag industry to produce high value products in Wasco County.... As a commissioner, she wants to focus on mental health issues, provide senior services for independent living, and get more involved with schools. “For example,” she said, “we may find that Public Health, Parks, the Extension Service/4H, and museums could be more integrated with our schools.” ROD RUNYON: Runyon: Proud of record. He is being challenged in the November election for the Position 3 seat on the commission by Bridget Bailey, a local attorney. ... One of the biggest achievements of the commission, he said, has been making the budgeting process more accountable. Because the county is grappling with a huge loss of federal revenue, he said it has been imperative to pare down the budget and make the financial system work as efficiently as possible. ... The 13 departments now use “actuals” in budget planning instead of having unused funds carry over from year to year. ...“I was a port commissioner when Google first started making noises about coming into town,” he said. “I think it is the job of someone in public service, in that role as in this, to get behind companies like Google... Runyon said the county’s proposal for a road taxing district to offset that deficit became “unfair without The Dalles, which has the greatest population center, being involved.” He said the millage rate became too high to move forward with the plan. “For that reason, I made the motion to withdraw and it was the right thing to do,” he said.“I want to expand on my record and continue what we’re doing to make Wasco County a better place.” Read the full articles by following links below:
