Watch this if you hadnt seen it already. That is the title of the video below. It is a clip from the HBO drama Newsroom. I do agree with most of what is said, save the part about our generation being the “Worst. Generation. In history.” But some very valid points are made, and I love what Jeff Daniels’ character says at the end, that the reason why the United States is no longer the greatest country in the world is because we, the citizens, aren’t as informed as we used to be. That is 100 percent true. Americans have become so ignorant, and even worse, so apathetic to what is happening around us (and sadly the two feed into each other, keeping the cycle going). People don’t bother to get the facts anymore, and that is largely because the mass media doesn’t bother to get the facts anymore. You don’t know who you can trust to provide you with an accurate, non-bias account of the news. Does that even exist nowadays? I cannot say this enough, but I will say it over and over again for as long as I need too: Our generation’s legacy is entirely dependent on how we respond to the immense challenges we have before us. We cannot let fear stand in our way, and we cannot let our differences divide us. But most importantly, we must arm ourselves with the knowledge we need to make informed decisions about how to tackle the problems we face. I’m pretty sure I’ve said this a few times on this blog already, but it is worth repeating: Ignorance is like kryptonite to a democracy. In a self-governing society (i.e. a democracy), a well-informed citizenry is essential. We are electing leaders to make decisions for us, but if we don’t know what is going on, how are going to make sure our elected leaders are making the right decisions for our country? The bottom line is we control the outcome of our legacy. We must believe that we can–and that we will–change things for the better. If we don’t, then we will fail to improve the declining state of our country and thus we will without a doubt be theWorst. Generation. In history. Fortunately, I don’t see that happening because I don’t think our generation will let it happen. Our destiny tells a different story. We will make the United States of America the greatest it has ever been. And that will be our legacy. I wish I had said that.
