Watched “Madras Café” last night. Undoubtedly, the Film is made well but when a film comes from a Director like Shoojit Sirkar, one expects more and that’s why I was disappointed. A film based on such a sensitive issue like the Ethnic war in Lanka and the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi , should present the complete political picture and here lies the lacuna of this film. The film never shows how the vacillating politics of the Indian Government led to the killing of our Prime Minister. The Indian Government initially supported and helped not only the LTTE ( LTF in the film ) but also other militant groups in Sri Lanka. Even Thanu , the suicide bomber who killed Rajiv Gandhi was trained by RAW. But then our Government made a volte-face and sent army or the so called Peace keeping force to Lanka, which used force to suppress the Lankan Tamils. Sending of the Peace Force was highly criticised in India too. The Tamil perspective and the ideology of the LTTE is not there in the film. In reality, it was severe deprivation and injustice meted out to the Tamils, that made Prabhakaran ( Anna in the Film ) their unchallenged Hero. Camera work and Direction is good and John Abraham and other actors performed very well but the Film surely needed a better script. What I could not understand is why the Director used Flashback to tell the story in a Film, which is in the genre of thriller. Also, the use of Tagore’s poem at the end looks much used and cliché. I personally feel that Director Shoojit Sirkar, wanted to play safe and keeping Box Office in mind, just wanted to make a political thriller and not make any political statement. Thus, a film which otherwise had the potential of becoming a cult cinema in the political genre, just remains a political thriller.
