Watched a very good documentary series about so many of the great - TopicsExpress

Watched a very good documentary series about so many of the great people in Darndale, following them through their daily lives. Lots of great positive activities and initiatives to be seen. A couple of things however did bother me somewhat. I have worked long, long, long hours at different levels throughout my life until coming to the stage where I decided to set up my own business. During my career I got up to a very privileged earning position, then had more than half my salary wiped out during recession then slowly built it back up. I live in a house I pay a mortgage on, I used to drive nice company cars, I used to be perceived as possibly comfortable or even well off. There were regular references by people featured in the programme to holidays or weekends away or other such luxuries that other people take for granted. There were also people featured who are out of work and are single parents who managed to pay back a loan of nearly €100 a week to afford a holiday to Euro Disney and nice things for Christmas. Every house had very nice televisions and gaming consoles and lots of games etc. Can I just say that nobody should be judged based on their address or their background one way or another and there is very much such a thing as reverse snobbery. I do not begrudge anyone anything they get given or earn in life, but I have not managed a family holiday in 8 years, I have had utility companies send threatening letters, I have had to have very difficult conversations with banks. I have done all this as is my obligation as a parent and as somebody who has a monthly set of financial obligations to make. I would love to take my family away to Euro Disney (AND I WILL) and most certainly would not ever take that luxury for granted! My children do not take any expensive gifts for granted either. So many other people who have struggled, lost their homes, had to deal with heavy handed financial institutions (who were all bailed out of all responsibility to their own debts ) would definitely not ever take for granted a family holiday or nice gifts for their kids. They also get or got feck all help , because they are working for a living. In the same way the show illustrates that people from a certain class or area should never be generalised and assumed to be all the same, that applies to people from all walks of life! Fair play also to the makers for bringing that balance to all very clearly for the people of Darndale!!
